Know the pH Scale, Save Your Furniture
This is Sheila Ingram at Heavenly Touch Maids here in Akron, Ohio, and we’re gonna talk about the pH scale today and how it relates to the science of cleaning. You know, you can’t have a talk about the science of cleaning unless you talk about pH. We’re gonna harken to your old high school chemistry class where you may have been asleep when they talked about pH, but let’s chat about it.
Introduction to pH Scale
pH is the relative measure of the acidity or alkalinity in a water-based solution. It’s a scale from 1 to 14 with 7 being neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic, and anything above 7 is alkaline, and the further you get away from that 7 the stronger the solution becomes.
So a pH of 3.5, which is about where vinegar’s at, is stronger on the acidic side than something with a pH of 5. On the alkaline side, something with a pH of 12, like a bleach, is more alkaline than something with a pH of 10. The pH scale is on a logarithmic scale, and it increases 10 times with every step you take. There are no baby steps in the pH scale. Let’s illustrate.
The Huge Difference pH Makes
Let’s say 7 which is the neutral pH, is a 50 yard line on a football field. You move from 7 to 8 pH, you move an inch. You move from 8 to 9 pH, you move 11 inches. You move from 9 to 10, now you’re at the 47 yard line. You move from 10 to 11, you’re at the 19 yard line. What happens when you move from an 11 to a 12? You find yourself in the parking lot. Think about that jump. You move from a 12 to a 13, you’re 1.75 miles away. And when you go from a 13 to a 14 you’re 17.5 miles away. Wowsers, right?
Proper pH Cleaners are Vital
There’s a huge difference between a pH of 10 and a pH of 12. You don’t want someone coming in your home waving a vinegar bottle around, which is a pH of 3.5, and they start spraying your limestone or any calcium-based stone, any of the softer natural stones, such as marble. You don’t want that.We don’t carry vinegar here at Heavenly Touch Maids. Most of our stuff is eco-friendly and has a pH of 7. The 7 works very well. It’s very safe.
And your stuff that’s under our care, custody and control, we know what we’re doing and we’ll be spot on.
